2008 Fall Coats: Trench

The next coat style on the list is the trench. This Plaid Wool Trench longer version of the pea coat is very similar in style, but generally has a more limited color palette and is most often made of wool or nylon.

The body restrictions are also very similar to the pea coat. Pears need to be even more careful with the trench, as the mid-thigh length accentuates wide thighs even more.

One additional factor to consider is your height. Shorter individuals need to ensure that the coat hits in the right location. The length should be around mid-thigh. Be careful the coat does not hit at or below the knee instead.

2008 Fall Coats: Pea Coats

Michael Kors Pea Coat The first coat I would like to discuss is the Pea Coat. This coat is very popular this year, and is available in a variety of colors, patterns, and fabrics. The upper-thigh hem of the pea coat, however, can cause certain body types to fall out of proportion.

Since the eye is drawn downwards to the hem, thereby widening the hips, this coat can be very bad for pears. The already wide hip and narrow shoulders of the pear are exaggerated by the pea coat. All hope is not lost for the lovely pear though. Many pea coats are sold with bold, colorful scarves. Tying this accessory around your neck will add some flair to the top half of the body and stop the eye from traveling downwards. When in doubt, try the coat on and see what you think.

The pea coat is especially nice for apples. The v-neck and length draw the eye downward, adding some width to the thigh area (where you tend to taper in). Beware of the scarves that are so helpful to the pears though. Since you are wider on top, you want to avoid bulking up your top half. The coat will look great on you, just use caution with the scarf. I understand that scarves are often necessary to keep you warm – I am simply talking fashion. If it is cold enough to wear the scarf, by all means, keep warm! Just avoid wearing one for the fun of it.

Coats: How can I keep warm AND look good?

When you live in Middle Tennessee, you don’t expect to see snow until February – if you see it all. Last night, I saw snow. Not much, but there were quite a few flurries showing up in my porch light as I let my dog out for his nightly sniff. You may be wondering where I am going with this and the answer is: coats. There are areas of this country that have had record lows and unseasonably cold weather, so I think now is a great time for a discussion of coats.

It can be so confusing when you go into the store to pick out a coat. You know you want something that will look great on you all the time. Most of us can’t afford more than one coat – especially with the way prices have been trending on them. You can find the perfect coat! Body type, as always, is essential. Long coats don’t look great on everybody. Short coats don’t look great on everybody. The key is knowing your body type and knowing what style will look best on you. Armed with that knowledge, purchasing that perfect winter coat can be a breeze! Join me over the next few days as we enter the warm and toasty topic of coats.

Harem Pants are Back??

Ever heard of the theory that all fashion is cyclical? The same styles will come and go and come back again a decade or two later. Well, in my opinion, some styles just need to remain in the past. Harem pants are one of them. Not sure what I am talking about? Think MC Hammer – only back then they were referred to as “parachute pants”. One could just as easily think of “I Dream of Jeannie”.

The pants are baggy up top and taper down. They Harem Pant from Wet Seal have a low crotch and a pleated or gathered waist. Youlookfab.com has an article about them asking opinions about whether this look should come back. My answer is a very definite NO. They are not flattering on anyone. The pants even make the models look bad and they have the world’s “ideal” body. Please, let’s put harem pants back in the fashion vault and leave them there.

Sorry I’ve Been Missing…

The world of fashion doesn’t stop for much, but in my little world it does stop for kidney stones. Sunday I was admitted to the hospital and had surgery on Monday to remove the stone. Tomorrow, I will try to get back to my normal level of posting, but, tonight, I will take one more evening to recover from a somewhat painful procedure (and do some catching up on the fashion world)!

Michelle Obama Flops Again

Maybe the future first lady should stick to J. Crew. Her outfit on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno was the best thing I’ve seen in awhile. Tuesday night, when Barack Obama was elected president, Michelle Obama walked out in, yet again, another designer dress that just did not work.

Michelle Obama at President-Elect Obama's Acceptance SpeechThis time it was Narciso Rodriguez. The black dress with red detailing was frighteningly reminiscent of the red hourglass found on the bottom half of a black widow spider. Rodriguez showcased a sexier version of the dress as part of his spring line this past September. I did not really like it then either.

Not only was the color not very flattering, but the cut was off as well. Michelle Obama has wider hips and insists on wearing things that make them even wider. When will she learn one of the most important rules of fashion: Just because it has a designer label (and will presumably cost thousands), doesn’t mean it will look good on you?

Friday Finds – November 7, 2008

I’ve decided to start a new weekly series called “Friday Finds”. It will feature sales from different  stores for your weekend shopping enjoyment. Of course – if you don’t want to shop for yourself – you can always hire someone to do it for you! If there is a particular store you want me to keep an eye on, let me know!

Kohl’s: They are having a great sale this weekend with Saturday Early Bird Specials (6am-11am) and Friday Night Owl Specials (3pm-Midnight) includes 50% off outerwear for children, 50-60% suit separates for men. There are some great gift ideas in the sale as well. Full Ad Here

Macy’s: They are having a Veteran’s Day designer sale. From Michael Kors to I.N.C., the deals bound. There are great deals for the whole family and the home. If you’re in the market, they are having an awesome mattress sale. Full Ad Here

Blush Boutique: This local Nashville store just received a shipment of great designer dresses including Badgley Mischka, BCBG, and more. From what I hear, they are priced to sell. So, if you are looking for a great dress for all those Christmas parties, Blush is the place to look this weekend.
