New York Fashion Week Day 9 and 10

Day Nine: February 19, 2009

Zac Posen, Isaac Mizrahi, and Vera Wang were some of the big names of Day Nine. My favorite of the day was the retro-chic collection of Catherine Malandrino. Her thirties style collection was full of fantastic dresses, jackets, and tops. The primary skirt sillhouette is the ever classic pencil. The colors and fabric textures mean there is something in the collection for day or night.

Day Ten: February 20, 2009

The final day of New York Fashion Week 2009 was short and sweet. Ralph Lauren showed as well as the most recent season of Project Runway. While the latest season of Project Runway has yet to even have a release date set, the three finalist showed their creations at Bryant Park. Cloaked in anonymity, we saw three different styles and tastes. The first was highly layered with jackets, sweaters, and belts. The second was feminine, with a lot of frills, sculpture, and a soft color pallette.  The third had a very hard egde, with a lot of black and sleek, crisp lines. My favorite of the three was collection number two. Whoever the winner will be, it has definitely left me very curious and impatient for the newest season (whenever that might be!)

Fashion week may be over, but that doesn’t mean great style has to end. Who were your favorites?

New York Fashion Week Day 7 and 8

Day Seven: February 17, 2009

Day Seven boasted names such as Narciso Rodriguez, Max Azria, and Badgley Mischka. My favorite today (and current runner for favorite so far) is Joanna Mastroianni. I absolutely love the dresses she designed. The full skirts and varying sleeve style make for a gorgeous collection of day and night dresses. Again, we see the gorgeous purple jewel tone that I think will be a staple color in the fall of 2009.

Day Eight: February 18, 2009

The big names of Day Eight include Marchesa, Michael Kors, Vivienne Tam, and Oscar de la Renta. There are many good collections this day, but I think my favorite is Carmen Marc Valvo’s line. His collection of evening wear is spectaular. Ranging from pant/shirt seperates, cocktail dresses, and evening gowns, the collection is full pops of color, shimmering fabrics, and classic sillhouettes.

New York Fashion Week Day 5 and 6

Day Five: February 15, 2009

The most notable designers of Day Five were Diane von Furstenburg, DKNY, and Victoria Beckham. My favorite line of the day was Lela Rose. The lines and patterns of her coats, skirts, and tops were fantastic. Her use of textures was interesting, unique, and easily wearable by the everyday woman.

Also, Jonathan Saunders is keeping with his favorite color, Red. The color was in or accenting nearly every outfit on the runway. Not to mention the bright red set of his runway.

Day Six: February 16, 2009

Day Six boasted Marc Jacobs, Alice + Olivia, Betsey Johnson, Luca Luca, Thakoon (a favorite of our First Lady), Donna Karan, and Carolina Herrera. One of my favorites of the day was Carlos Miele. I absolutely loved all of the mermaid cut gowns he displayed. The colors were a beautiful jewel tone – perfect for fall. I also really liked the geometric prints he used. They are vibrant, without being over bearing for a lot of body types.

Best and Worst of the Oscars 2009

Watching the Red Carpet at the Oscars are one of my favorite past times. There are always a few that stand out as fantastic. On the flip side, there are always a few where you can nothing but, “What were you thinking?” Here are my top picks in both categories.

Worst Dressed: Tilda Swinton

Tilda Swinton at the 81st annual Academy Awards on Feb. 22, 2009. By Bob Riha, Jr., USA TODAY.

Tilda Swinton has historically shown a very eclectic style. Sometimes, she hits it out of the park in a chic, avant garde sort of way. This year, she did not quite hit it out of the park. In this beige top and draped skirt by Lanvin, her petite frame looks lumpy. The baggy top is simply unflattering. The way the skirt is gathered almost appears like it did not fit at first, so that just gathered it to make it stay on her hips. Sorry, Tilda, no hit this year.

Best Dressed: Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet at the 81st annual Academy Awards on Feb. 22, 2009. By Dan MacMedan, USA TODAY.

Chic and Classy as ever, the winner of Best Actress was absolutely stunning in her Atelier Yves Saint Laurent gown. The asymmetrical look is gorgeous on her petite frame. The splash of shimmering lace on the bottom portion of the dress balances the shimmering shoulder strap, creating a simply elegant gown. As always, Kate is a pleasing sight to see on the Red Carpet.

Oscar Night Twitter Role

#oscars Miley looks like a glittery flower!

lol #oscars apparently Miley’s dress weighs about 100,000 pounds….that’s right…100,000 lbs

#oscars I have to admit, that I really like Miley’s dress. It’s grown up and youthful in all the right ways

RT @luxaholics: Miley’s beaded dress on the red carpet is Zuhair Murad — from the Zuhair Murah Haute Couture Spring 2009 Collection #oscars

I am not digging Zac Efron’s slicked back hair. #oscars

Vanessa Hudgen’s hair is gorgeous…the dress isn’t too bad either #oscars

#oscars Mrs Kevin Kline looks very polished…and young

#oscars Got a full shot of Vanessa hudgens dress – it’s a sleek mermaid style dress. Not too bad, but I’m rethinking my opinion of the top

RT @luxaholics: Oh Cyrus Family…first time Mom’s ever worn diamonds?! Really?!?! #oscars

#Oscars those Slumdog kids are absolutely adorable! Freida Pinto’s dress is fabulous. I love the color!

Heidi Klum’s dress color is great, about I dont care for the neck line. A little too…high…for me #oscars

I like the E! comment about Heidi’s dress having an "origami" feel

#oscars Natalie Portman’s hair looks very regal tonight. I really like her hot pink dress too!

Normally, Anne Hathaway is very chic, but I don’t really like her dress tonight. A little too glitter-tastic for me

Sophia Loren’s dress is a little too 80’s prom night in the shoulders

Mickey Rourke looks like a used car salesman tonight #oscars

I do not like beyonce’s dress…the graphics are somewhat ill-placed at times

Queen Latifah looks fantastic tonight! #oscars

Meryl Streep looks fantastic. Very classy. #oscars

I do not like JEssica Biel’s dress. It looks like someone put a really long napkin in her neckline

Angie’s wearing black! Imagine that?! oh…wait…she always wears black…#oscars

Phillip Seymour Hoffman – lose the beanie! #oscars

Daniel Craig is gorgeous. #oscars

Kate Winslett is gorgeous. I love her hair and the asymmetrical lace on the bottom of her dress

wow..angie is wearing color…but it’s a little early to break out the St. Patty’s day earings #oscars

RT @avelle: Kate Winslet in YSL stunning as always. And another one shoulder gown on the red carpet. #oscars

I love the straps on Reese’s dress. The interesting layering of the skirt is interesting and the color is great. #oscars

New York Fashion Week Day 3 and 4

Day Three: February 13, 2009

Friday the 13th, while superstitious for many was far from scary on the runway. More than 25 designers his the tents at Bryant Park to show their fall 2009 lines. One of my favorites of the day was the collection by Costello Tagliapietra. The sleek, retro lines of their collection are perfect for nearly every body type. While most of the colors are muted (lots of grays and blacks), the overall look of the collection is fabulous.

If you are looking for something a bit more colorful than the Costello Tagliapietra line, you might want to consider Peter Som’s line. Funky prints and chunky neck muffs are the staples in Som’s line. While some the prints are a little too much for me, the overall cuts and colors of the line are fantastic.

Day Four: February 14, 2009

Day four was also a very busy day. My favorite show of the day had absolutely nothing to do with modern fashion. The Barbie Tribute Show was absolutely stunning. 5o designers were given the task of creating a Barbie inspired through three different categories. Looking through the show, it is easy to see how your favorite blonde and mine inspired the fashion dreamers.

On a more serious note, I really enjoyed the United Bamboo line. The punches of color against neutral backgrounds found in nearly every item in the collection displays a great use of color. While some of the cuts don’t really appeal to me, over all, I found the collection to be very wearable for the ever day woman.

See a list of all shows here.

New York Fashion Week Days 1 and 2

This week was fashion week in New York. All the hottest designers showcase their Fall 2009 collections. Today is the final day of 9 straight days of eye candy. Over the next few days, I will go day by day and give my favorites. (This means several posts a day, so check back often!) There are simply too many goodies to cover in one post.

Day One: February 11, 2009

Day one was a short day. Only three designers showcased their designs on the runway: Jenni Kayne, Sachin and Babi for Ankasa, and Lyn Devon. My favorite of the three is Lyn Devon. The lines of her suiting pieces are a bit more feminine then the others that day (something I prefer). Additionally, her prints are fantastic – particularly the poppies. They are a subtle way to do a floral print without being overbearing.

Day Two: February 12, 2009

Day two featured Rebecca Minkoff, Prabal Gurung, Catherine Holstein, Wren, Geren Ford, Vicente Villarin, Monique Lhuillier, Rachel Roy, 6119, Loris Diran, Jillian Lewis, Bibhu Mohapatra, and TSE. My favorite line of the day was the Vicente Villarin line. Designed by Joanne Cordero Reyes, the ruffles and froth of the dresses are feminine and flirty. I am really drawn the draped, layered look of many of her items. Her seperates are fantastic on their own. I am not so sure about the pairs she made, but in and of themselves, the items are fabulous.

My Review of Confessions of a Shopaholic

I know this is some time coming. I told you it would be here on the weekend, but life got in the way. (Good news for all of you! I quit my day job today, so very soon NashVogue will go back to daily posts!!)

So, Confessions of a Shopaholic. I REALLY liked it. Isla Fisher captured the slightly eccentric ways of Rebecca Bloomwood perfectly. Hugh Dancy pulls off Luke Brandon’s confident, slightly arrogant

If you’ve read the books, go in with an open mind. The screenplay pulls from the first two books, so don’t expect anything true to the book. However, in order to compress the Becky/Luke story, I thought they did a great job.

Oh, and for those Fashionistas out there trying to convince their male counterparts to take them, my hubby actually admitted he thought it was pretty good.

In my opinion: Definitely worth it. Have fun!

Confessions of a Shopaholic

Today, the most anticipated movie of 2009 comes out. Well, ok. Maybe I am the only anticipating it that much. Today is the release date of Confessions of a Shopaholic.

My husband is taking me to see it tomorrow for Valentine’s Day (the sweetie!). I can’t wait. I am a huge fan of the book, and every other book by Sophie Kinsella. While I already know there will be several liberties taken with the movie that will make it different than the book, I still think it’s going to be an excellent movie. (Click the link at the end of the post to get the book!)

The wardrobe will be top notch. Put together by Patricia Field, the costume designer for Sex and the City, the colors are vibrant and designer names a rampant.

I hope you enjoy the Confessions of a Shopaholic Trailor. Tomorrow or Sunday I’ll let you know what I thought of the movie.
