Health and Beauty: How to Apply Eyeliner

Something that can be make-it-or-break-it for you makeup appearance is your eyeliner. Too much can be very overpowering. If it is done correctly, eyeliner can make your eyes stand out and enhance their color. That being said, I’ll leave it to the experts. Here is a great video on how to apply eyeliner by MakeupGeekTV on youtube.com. It’s a bit lengthy, but I found it very informative and helpful. Enjoy and good luck!

Outfit Inspirations: A Baseball Game

Spring is well under way and with it comes warm weather and baseball. Whether you are a fan or not, it is hard to avoid one of America’s favorite past times. Church or office softball leagues, minor league teams, and the majors are all filling the local news and fields with dust and fun. Whether you are going to cheer on your favorite major league team or tease the guys on your church team, there are several factors that go into what you wear.

James Perse at ShopStyle

The first consideration is whether you are going to a day game or a night game. If it is a night game, you will want to bring layers with you. Earlier in the evening, the weather will be warmer. You will want to be sure to bring a jacket or sweater to wear after the sun goes down and the air cools.

New York & Co. at ShopStyle

Second to consider is where the game is going to be. You can dress much nicer to a major league game than you would want to at a local game, such as your church’s softball league. The reason for this is a dirt thing. You are much more likely to get covered in residual dust when sitting on bleachers at a local field than in the stands of a professional game. Go more casual and choose colors that don’t show dirt too well.

Nike at ShopStyle

Finally, think of the your team’s colors. Whether you are a true fan or not, it’s fun to really get into it and dress to support. If you have it, plan your outfit around your favorite team’s colors. For me, I’ve grown up to be a Philadelphia Phillies game, so my game outfit would consist of something red.

Go out and have fun. I’m not a big baseball fan, but it’s a great way to hang out with friends and family.

A Great Article at StyleBakery.com on Wearing Heels

Good day, all! As you may have noticed from some of my tweets, I have been helping out with a charity event in my hometown of Montgomery, AL. As a result, I have not been able to write an article today! However, I did not want you lovely readers of mine to feel forsaken! So, I found a great article over at stylebakery.com that I hope you will enjoy.

The article is in their “ask us” section and answers the question of a woman who feels uncomfortable wearing heels. I know there are many women out there nervous about wearing heels. I was one of them a while back, but now I love wearing them! In fact, I was in a similar position as this woman. Except, instead of being taller than my friends when I wore heels, I was taller than my friends when they wore heels! Which, of course, made me even taller when I wore heels.

I think heels are a great way to pull together and dress up any outfit. Hopefully, this article at stylebakery.com will help you overcome your fears. (Look at the end for a great “How to Walk in Heels” video!) Enjoy!

Outfit Inspirations: What to Wear to a Concert

Dressing for a concert can be a fun experience. Of course, this depends on the concert. If it is a classical pianist requiring formal wear, well, maybe not. What I am referring to is the ever fun rock concert. You can dress up in your chic-est of all punk rock clothing. Even pop stars such as Miley Cyrus elicit a punk aura from the goers of her concerts – or so I would guess from the clothing line she has at Wal-Mart.

So the question is: What do you wear? I would start with jeans. Dark jeans give off a more “rocker” look. The skinnier the better. I do have to say a disclaimer here and say that skinny jeans are not for everyone. Pear shaped bodies really need to avoid skinny jeans. Denim capri pants are also an excellent option.

Next, I would go with a graphic tee – the more artistic the better. Don’t think “cute saying” graphic tee, think flowers and swirls. I love some of the ones over at Roxy.

There are several options next. One, you could wear a menswear style vest over your graphic tee. This look was particularly popular in the fall, and still has some merit today. Two, try a coordinating scarf. Scarves are very “in” right now and, paired with a graphic tee, have a very chic look about them.

Finally, if hats are your style, go for it. Newsboy hats are a common style in the rocker community. Just let loose and have fun.

Whether you want to dress in a rocker chic style or not, just be yourself. You may find it fun to “borrow” another style for an evening out. You may feel more comfortable in your own style. Whatever you choose, just have fun!

Health and Beauty: How to Apply Mascara

My mother never wore much make-up, so when I reached that age where young ladies decide it is time to wear make-up, I didn’t really have someone to teach me how. I learned eventually, thanks to shows like What Not to Wear and the ever gorgeous, Carmindy. The one thing that scared me the most to try was mascara. I thought for the maiden post in Health and Beauty, how to apply mascara would be great. I will leave it to a YouTube expert, as to this day, it still scares me. Do you have any tips or tricks of your own??

Fashion Trend Friday: Stripes

A popular trend this Spring and Summer seems to be stripes. Vertical or horizontal, wide or thin, it doesn’t really matter what your stripes look like. Stripes are covering everything from tops to bottoms and handbags to sandals.

While they can look absolutely adorable on some, stripes can be a very difficult thing for many women to wear as they tend to have very strong affects on the shape of your body. For example, if you are a little on the wide side, avoid horizontal stripes, as they just make you appear even wider.

Vertical stripes are great for adding height. If you are a bit on the short side, vertical stripes have an elongating effect. On the flip side, if you are tall and don’t want to be any taller, avoid vertical stripes.

Stripes can very easily be a friend or foe. If the shirt is too tight, the stripes might become more like waves. A definite fashion faux pas.

I think stripes are a fantastic look in the right circumstances. Everyone can wear stripes, but not everyone can wear the same stripes. Have fun with stripes and just be a ware of what your body can and can’t handle.

Blush Boutique

The following is an interview I did with David Harris of Blush Boutique back in October of 2008. As I’ve mentioned before, I am going to be restructuring NashVogue a bit. The first step in this restructuring is to have a different column each day of the week. On Thursdays, I want to showcase small boutiques and newcomer designers. If you have any boutiques you’d like to know about or a designer friend trying to make it in the business, let me know! I’d love to showcase them here. Enjoy!

Wednesday, October 15, I had the pleasure of sitting down with David Harris. He is one of the owners of Blush Boutique in The Shoppes at Brentwood Hills (click here for a map). Their hours are Monday through Saturday 10am – 7pm and Sunday 1pm – 6pm.

The Interview:

Me: Give me a brief description of your store.

David: Essentially, while providing a boutique style atmosphere, our objective is to provide, you know, really great clothing at a great price without having to sacrifice style or the quality. Times are a bit tough right now for many people, but they still want to make sure that they can treat themselves and we want to be the people who allow them to do that.

Me: What are some of the top labels that you sell?

David: We carry some more exclusive lines that you’ll find, Pasha, Trinity, B. McGee, much of which is certainly not going to be found anywhere else in Nashville. Some more of the more recognizable designers that you’ll find are, you know, BCBG, something that resonates a lot with people. We’ve got Laundry by Shelli Segal. All the way up to your designer dresses like Badgley Mischka. That seems to be very popular as well.

Me: What makes you unique?

David: Once again, I would think that, you know, our niche so to speak is the fact that we’re providing a lot of high end designer stuff. It’s all current season. Its’ all first hand. But at a third of the price.

Me: Who is your favorite designer?

David: My personal favorite designer…the woman wearing the clothes, to be honest, because one designer doesn’t look the same on every girl. So..I don’t have a favorite I guess I’d say.

Me: What can people expect when they come to your store?

David: Hopefully, a comfortable and relaxed environment, intriguing finds and unparalleled customer service.

Me: If you could let people know one thing about your store, what would it be?

David: …We’ve only been open for some odd 10 days at this juncture, so, there’s not a lot of foundation underway at this point. But I think that, moving forward, never really expect to see the same thing. If you came in on a weekly basis you’re more often than not going to find something completely different than your last experience.

The store is great. I love the atmosphere. Everyone I have met there is very nice and friendly. Their selection is great and so are the prices. You should definitely check this store out!

Spring and Summer Trend: Plaid is Here to Stay

In recent years, we have seen a love affair with plaid in Spring and Summer fashion. Tops, bottoms, shoes, and bags have all been pleasantly plaid. This Spring has seen a continuance of this sentiment. When surrounded by so much plaid, it can be a bit overwhelming to put outfits together. Trying to find the best top to go with those plaid shorts when all of the tops around seem to have stripes can be a bit of a tiring process.

Express at ShopStyle

For men, the plaid is primarily found on shorts or tops. I am a big fan of the plaid shorts on men. Pair them with a solid, matching polo. You can also pair them with a polo with a single bold stripe across the chest. Just make sure that the colors in the top complement the colors on bottom. For a more casual look, you can pair the plaid shorts with a matching graphic tee. The graphic on the front does not necessarily need to coordinate with the plaid in the bottoms as long as the base color of the tee coordinates. For the plaid tops, pair them with a solid color bottoms. Do not mix plaid tops with plaid bottoms. That is simply too much plaid.

Old Navy at ShopStyle

For women, the plaid is most prevalent on bottoms, shoes, and bags. I really like the plaid shorts (Bermuda and other) as well as the plaid skirts paired with a solid tee. It is a fun, casual look. I have also notice plaid straps on flip flops. These are great when paired with an outfit with coordinating colors. It is okay to mix plaids when on is on your shorts and the other on your shoes, just make sure that there is not a large contrast in the colors.

Janie and Jack at ShopStyle

Plaid is also popular for the little ones this year. Girls are being decked out in little plaid dresses, while the boys are wearing plaid shorts nearly identical to Dad’s. The same principals apply when trying to make outfits for the little ones. Most of the time, they are sold as outfits, which takes out a lot of the guess work for you.

If you have been afraid to try plaids, don’t be! They are a fun, stylish way to round out your Spring and Summer wardrobe.

Happy Good Friday!

I’m taking today off to travel for the Easter holiday. I just wanted to wish all of my readers a Happy Good Friday and a safe and fun Easter weekend. I try to keep my personal beliefs out of this blog, as it’s not the time or place for things other than great clothes. I did want to say today, though, that I want everyone to think about the sacrifice Jesus gave when he died on the cross for you. That’s what today is all about – the day He died. On Easter, we celebrate the day He rose. Whether you want to believe is up to you, and I’m not going to pressure you in any way or take more time here.

I hope everyone has a great weekend and I will see you back on Monday!
