Sale Spotter: Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday

One of the best times to shop is quickly approaching! The TN State Sales Tax Holiday begins a week from tomorrow, Friday August 7, and ends Sunday night, August 9. I’ve been saving my money and hope to knock out a lot of fall clothes shopping for my family and I.

The sales tax holiday is a fabulous time to get all of those much needed back to school items and other things you know you are going to need for the upcoming fall/winter season. Here are some tips to hopefully make this gold mine of savings a bit easier.

1. Know what is included in the TN Sales Tax Holiday.

Not everything is covered under the tax free status. Any clothing over $100 – not tax free. School supplies $100 or less are a go, as well as any computer under $1500. My suggestion on the computer – either go to a store or call a help line. Don’t place an order online because it may not be configured for the TN tax holiday. Dell is extremely helpful in this situation.

2. Know what you want ahead of time.

I plan to visit some of the stores I know I will find things at sometime during the upcoming week and scope some things out. Try on some things ahead of time, because the fitting room lines will be outrageous. It’s much less stressful if you know what size you are ahead of time. Then it’s just a case of seek and buy.

3. Look for ways to double up your savings.

A few weeks ago, I purchased a “Birthday Boy” shirt for my son’s first birthday at Carter’s. I was given a coupon good for the month of August that gave me 20% off a $50 purchase. It also had a 20% off a $40 purchase at Osh Kosh (right next door at The Avenue in Murfreesboro). Add those coupons to the sales they already have and the lack of tax and I know my first stops for clothes for my little man. Since the sales and coupons are issued from corporate, the tax-free part is an added savings bonus.

4. Be patient and have fun!

This is more just a warning. The crowds will be high (especially Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday night). Several retailers I’ve spoken to say the sales are higher than that of Black Friday!! So expect the crowds that go with that kind of sales. My guess is they will be even worse this year given the state of the economy and people desperately trying to cut some corners. Take everything in stride and have fun! Let me know your savings when your done. I’m curious!!

By the way, if you aren’t in Tennessee, check this out for a tax holiday schedule in other states.

New York and Company

New York and Company is having a great sale. There are over 200 items at $15 or under including some gorgeous maxi skirts for only $11.99. There is just about something for every category from jewelry to tops to shoes.

Carter’s

Carter’s is having a fantastic clearance sale for the smallest ones in your family. The clearance prices are only good in a Carter’s store, but they are well worth it if you have to travel just a bit. Plus, get a coupon for 20% off of a $50 purchase through July 1.

Great Deals on Children’s Clothes This Weekend!!

If you are a parent of small children like I am, you know how hard it is to keep your kids in clothes that fit. I know my little guy is growing like a weed! This weekend, there are some great sales going on targeted for your little one.

Carter’sThey are having an awesome clearance sale. All p.j.’s are $5.99. The rest of the clearance is $3.99 and up WITH an additional 20% off. Plus, you take an additional 20% off of your purchase of $50 or more with this coupon below!Click to Open, Then Print!

OshKosh B’Gosh – Jeans, jeans, and more jeans! $12 jeans (select styles of course) for sizes 3m-16. Bodysuits (sizes 3m – 24m) are only $5. Plus, they are running the same coupon as Carter’s (since they are the same company) – 20% off of your purchase of $50 or more. And here it is…

The Children’s Place – The Monster Sale is going Spring Style at The Children's Place on now. You can get an additional 30% off of clearance items now. They have a great winter jacket for baby boys (I’ve had the hardest time finding these!) for $20.99. Since it is clearance, quantities are very low (or so the website says). I will check for myself this weekend. As far as new clothes go, I love their Spring Style outfit. the colors and print are adorable and bright for spring.

Gymboree – They are having their semi-annual Rock On! at Gymboree sale. The clearance items are up to 60% off of the already marked down prices. Also, in order to promote their new line, Rise and Shine, premiering in February, if you spend $75 you will get a 25% off coupon to use on the new line when it arrives. Plus, they have some great new lines. Being the mom of a little boy, I absolutely LOVE the Rock On! Collection.

Sometimes, shopping for our little ones can be just as much, if not more, fun than shopping for ourselves. Happy shopping!!

How to Shop at Wal-Mart

I have talked many times about Target and their wealth of high quality, fashion forward clothing. Their big-name designers make Target the ideal budget-conscious shopping playground. I have not, however, talked about Wal-Mart.

If you are like me, you probably just walk right past the clothing at Wal-Mart. In the past, their clothes have been cheaply made and way out of fashion. However, the other day, something caught my eye. Wal-Mart has their own designer label now! While they have had some great brands in the past (George is a always a great fall back), they now have their own designer – Norma Kamali.

While the selection in store is limited, there are over 150 items to chose from online. The line is extremely broad including work wear, snappy casual, and graphic tees. Additionally, the line is very eco-friendly, featuring a collection of organic tops.

The biggest turn-off might just be that it IS at Wal-Mart. Well, I found a great article on The Budget Fashionista to help you over come called “How To Shop Walmart”. They give some very good tips on how to overcome the stigma and get some great deals at the budget giant. Happy Shopping!

Great Pre-New Year’s Event at Blush

Several times on NashVogue, I have mentioned some interesting things going on at Blush Boutique in Brentwood. This time, it is refreshing to see a shop with a heart. Today, from 4 pm to 8 pm they are having a sale to benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

The benefit to you is 25% off everything in the store. The benefit to St. Jude’s is that, during those hours, 10% of all sales will go to them. Additionally, Horizon Wine and Spirits of Nashville will be providing wine and champagne as you shop, making this a truly special occasion.

If you are like me, you have some money from Christmas to spend on yourself. I hope to encourage you to treat yourself, and some special children, to something wonderful at Blush.
