Michelle Obama Flops Again

Maybe the future first lady should stick to J. Crew. Her outfit on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno was the best thing I’ve seen in awhile. Tuesday night, when Barack Obama was elected president, Michelle Obama walked out in, yet again, another designer dress that just did not work.

Michelle Obama at President-Elect Obama's Acceptance SpeechThis time it was Narciso Rodriguez. The black dress with red detailing was frighteningly reminiscent of the red hourglass found on the bottom half of a black widow spider. Rodriguez showcased a sexier version of the dress as part of his spring line this past September. I did not really like it then either.

Not only was the color not very flattering, but the cut was off as well. Michelle Obama has wider hips and insists on wearing things that make them even wider. When will she learn one of the most important rules of fashion: Just because it has a designer label (and will presumably cost thousands), doesn’t mean it will look good on you?

Michelle Obama’s Blue Dress

When will Michelle Obama learn that just because a dress is made by a designer (*the writer’s assumption based on pervious wear) it may not look good on her? Mrs. Obama is a definite pear body type. These dresses she wear accentuates her wide hips. They make her look VERY disproportionate.

Last week, she made the same mistake. ThisMichelle Obama in Thakoon week’s dress does not have the odd detailing on the front, however, what was on her necklace?? Was it flowers? Were they clipped on? The shots on my screen made it hard to tell. However, they were completely inappropriate for the event. Michelle, please pick more dresses like the Thakoon wrap dress. They are so much more flattering for the figure!  (photo obtained from MissWhoever You Are)

In an effort to be bi-partisan, Cindy McCain’s bright red suit was a little up-tight. I didn’t like that it went all the way up her neck. Also, she kind of blended in with the bright red carpet. However, the fit was great for her long, slender body.

Michelle Obama’s Fashion Flop at the Debate

Tonight was the presidential debate here in the great city of Nashville, TN. So, naturally, NashVogue was paying attention to the fashion choices of our two potential first ladies. The winner? Cindy McCain.

Michelle’s Look: She wore a short, simple red dress with sequined bows on the neckline. This might have been a great dress for say a high school reunion, church on Sunday, or, maybe, mother of the bride?? Pretty much every other first lady or even potential first lady has worn a suit when in the public eye. Now, I am all for mixing things up, but this dress was NOT the way. A) It did not flatter her body. B) It was almost too casual for the situation. C) Sequins? Really? Michelle, you are typically a stylish woman…what happened??

Cindy’s look: Cindy’s suit was a classic blue suit. The color is very in style this season. The cut was classic and very appropriate for a potential first lady. The cut flattered her body type. Kudos to Mrs. McCain!

As a side note – I found it very interesting that both women were wearing the “color” of the opposite party. Also, pictures to follow tomorrow when I can find them.

Get Palin’s Debate Look

In a report on a CNN, it was suggested that Gov. Sarah Palin’s suit for the VP debate on October 3rd was designed by Valentino. Now, I don’t know how much it cost, but I can guarantee you it was not cheap. According to some web rumors, it costs anywhere between $2500 and $3500.

So, how can you get Palin’s look without the price tag?

Sarah Palin – Debate Fashion

Many Americans tuned in last night to watch the much-anticipated vice presidential debate between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin. While the issues talked about where important, the only area of politics I want to get into is the fashion choice of Sarah Palin.

All throughout the election, Gov. Palin has worn Palin suits with different cuts and colors. Last night, however, Gov. Palin went with a classic black suit with a modern cut.

Pros: Let’s start with what I like about this suit. First, I love the tie belt at the waist. It really shows off the thin waist of our vice presidential candidate. Second, the sheen of the fabric adds a feminine softness to stark black of the suit. It gave her an extra softness on the television screen that a duller black fabric would not have.

Cons: While the suit is finely tailored, it looks a little large in the shoulders. It seems as though she is wearing shoulder pads that are too large. you can see at the shoulders where her sleeves dip in because the pads over hang. Secondly, and this has nothing to do with the suit, is her hair. I know this is a classic Sarah Palin look, but I think a true up-do (and she has done them) would have been a better choice for the event.

Sarah Palin managed to pull off the politician-meets-”hockey mom” look that is her signature. She was feminine, yet aggressive. I think her suit choice was perfect.
